One of the most valuable lessons I've learned in my early career - Treat your first few years like a buffet: TRY IT ALL

You owe it to yourself to try stuff and figure out what you like/ don't like, excel at/ drains you, motivates/ discourages you, the best communication style for you to receive/ deliver information in, the types of people you work/ don't work well with. Jump around and don't be afraid of making the wrong career choice because you can't.  As long as your head is in the right place and you go into everything with the intention of fully contributing and learning as much as possible, there is no way you can lose. You'll benefit your organization/ future organizations so much more by allowing yourself to figure out your success formula.

Everyone is different so don't listen to any blueprint advice as it won't work for you, not in the long run anyways because no one can sustain being something they aren't.  We all have a unique set of strengths and weaknesses, natural competencies, established skills, personality characteristics and it's not about changing who you are, it's about learning your own special formula for success and happiness.

If you don't get a lot of exposure to different perspectives in the business world, you won't be an effective leader later either.  People with one dimensional experiences really can't make decisions that benefit the business overall because all they know is what is needed for their business unit to succeed. The more you move around early in your career, the more well rounded your business acumen will be which will benefit you because people will respect your opinion and they'll want to work with you as you won't be an opponent  with competing interests, but a partner because you understand their unique challenges, goals and objectives.

Maybe this is just me, it could be totally different depending on your career path/ industry...what do you think?

Susan G. Komen RFTC 2011 in Summary

I got a call from the San Antonio Susan G. Komen foundation on Thursday to say thank you for my fundraising, reminded me that I still had some thank-you's to give myself.  My personal campaign ended up totaling over $6,200 and my Rackspace team ended up raising over $50,000 which makes such a huge impact on so many lives.  Participating in the 2011 Race For The Cure was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.  I almost lost my grandmother to breast cancer and contributing to a cause that allows others to be so lucky is truly a blessing.

Thank you to all of you who supported me via donations & encouragement:

* Tiffaney FoxQuintenia (my wonderful director whom I admire so much)

* Wayne Roberts (Rackspace Exec who generously matched my $3,100 campaign funds, bringing the total to over $6,200 for 2011)

* Tom Welch (for having the biggest heart in the entire world whether he wants to admit it or not, hehe)

* The Rackspace Cloud marketing Team

* My ex-team Cloud System Operations ( I love you guys, you're an amazing group & I miss seeing your faces everyday!)

* My awesome friends on Facebook (you guys were amazing, thanks for making it so much fun)

Can't wait to do it again next year!

Here is my personal challenge to benefit the 2011 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure...All proceeds go to the 2011 Rackspace team contribution!

I'm having some fun with my personal 2011 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure fundraising, benefiting the fight against Breast Cancer. I came up with this little promo to provide an opportunity for businesses, friends, online marketers, social media BFF's & otherwise to promote their causes and make an impact on the fight against Breast Cancer.

PLUS, one of our Rackspace execs has agreed to match the top contributor dollar for dollar, so far that's me so think of it like you're donating double :)

For anyone* who donates to my personal fundraising effort:

$5-10 donation = I'll 'like' anything you request and facebook/twitter post something in your honor or per your request!

$10+ = I'll write you a personal poem and Tweet/Blog/ Facebook post it on your wall AND personally post something you want to promote (business/event/favorite team/something funny)

$100+ = I'll give you 5 hours of labor for (San Antonio locals) OR the equivalent in online promotional services (lots and lots and lots of tweets hehe)... Yes, I'll clean your car/dog/house, run errands for you, promote your business, promote your event, volunteer at your favorite charity...ANYTHING(within ethical and legal boundaries!)you may desire. 5 hours of labor + saving boobies = WIN WIN

Top contributor =
I'll change my Twitter & Facebook profile picture to whatever you choose for a week AND give you 20 Tweets/Posts of your choice(that's advertising gold!) AND write a blog article on anything you choose. Can be your business, Something you're passionate about, research/investigative, a comical short story...it's in your hands, be creative!!
* Just added to the top contributor pot > My girlfriend is donating her 5 hours of $100 donation labor (Thank you Stephanie) to the top donator as well!

Please leave your name with the online donation!

*Disclaimer: Everyone except Tom Welch is eligible, because no one will beat you so they won't play...we can discuss alternate arrangements.

What am I doing?
I'm participating in the Susan G. Komen San Antonio Race for the Cure because I want to make a difference in the fight to end breast cancer. Please help me reach my fundraising goal by making your donation today!

Your breast health:
The greatest risk factors for breast cancer are being female and growing older. Breast cancer knows no boundary, be it age, gender, socio-economic status or geographic location. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. That's one in eight within your company, school, church or organization!

The key to survival is early detection. Three simple steps for early detection are regular mammograms, clinical exams and breast self-exams. And, remember, breast cancer affects more than just the patient; friends and family need support too.

What does Komen San Antonio do?
Susan G. for the Cure is an innovative leader in the breast cancer movement and the battle that threatens our mothers, daughters, wives, sisters and friends. Seventy-five percent of funds raised through events like Race for the Cure support local nonprofit programs providing vital breast cancer screening, treatment and education right here in San Antonio. The remaining 25 percent goes to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program to fund groundbreaking breast cancer research and scientific programs around the world.

Imagine a life without breast cancer? I am asking for your support to make this a reality. No donation is too small, anything you can give is appreciated!

We WILL find a cure!

My 13 year old sister covering Katy Perry's 'Firework'. Couldn't be prouder of her, made me a little misty eyed ;). Love to see people chase their dreams and develop their talents (especially my beautiful little sister). Guitar lessons are paying off Dad, Bravo!!

It's critical that the constitutional rights of US citizens are protected. Not only in tumultuous political times such as now, but always. We need unrelenting adherence to the constitution, it's all we really have. I'd like to know how UT is going to respond...I really hope they make this right; take accountability and admit that this was a violation of his constitutional rights, if not, we should all be worried.

My friend Tre asked if he could interview me for his senior project, apparently his group has been researching Rackspace  all semester and  wanted an inside opinion. They did a great job, the video turned out really well...Bravo!  Plus, you find out whether I'm Team Jacob or Team Edward ;-)

I'm obsessed with this band, particularly this song...how is it that they haven't made it into mainstream? Well, because the things we are exposed to in the market are, for the most part, those services, products, ideas, etc...that have been deemed profitable. I'm using this band as an example but the limitation of what is available to us transcends into every aspect of our lives; music, medicine, consumable goods, energy, the list could go on forever. In summary, we should promote the things we love. I present The Weeks and their song Buttons, my new favorite under-recognized band

The terms mission statement and vision statement are thrown around wildly without full understanding of what they really represent.  It is one of those concepts that because it seems so simple is often over-looked, this one of the reasons why I'm an advocate of companies embracing a Mantra. It puzzles me when I hear people say 'well their vision statement is ...blah blah blah' or hear about people being quizzed at work over their mission statement when virtually everything they do operationally is misaligned with the statement.  What the eff does it matter what your vision/mission statement is if it's just another paragraph to be memorized??  I mean don't get me wrong I think the Mission & Vision are undeniably valuable, but only if those who operate underneath them understand the concept fully.  Mantras really add value because they are short and to the point; answers the 'what do I get & why am I here' for both the customer and employee.  I could copy paste a wiki article but let me take a swing at it;

Mission vs. Vision and Mantra
A Vision should be 'Where we want to go' whereas, a Mission should be 'How do we get there'.  The Vision is the strategic, long-term, non-tangible goal or the legacy desired and the Mission is the tactical, day-to-day, hammer and nail approach to becoming what your vision outlays. A company's Mantra should be a few words to sum it all up. I'll use the company I work for, Rackspace Hosting, as an example...yes, it's biased but it's my blog so I can plug if I want to ;-)...
Rackspace's Vision: "It is our goal to be one of the world’s greatest service companies alongside companies like Ritz Carlton, Nordstrom and Lexus."
Answers the question 'What do we want to be known for' with 'Customer Service'...

Rackspace's Mission: "To change the way companies consume IT services by offering an entire portfolio of solutions to fit every customer's evolving needs."
Answers the question 'What is the tangible offering' with 'a portfolio of IT services'...

The Rackspace Mantra: "Experience Fantical Support"
Sums up 'what do I get' for the customer & 'why am I here' for the employee with 'Fanatical Support'.

You have to know where you are going, how you are going to get there and what it should feel like along the way to really be successful at anything.  I like to think of it like this; The Vision is the sight of the mountain top, the Mission is your pick-axe & snow boots and the Mantra is "don't eat the yellow snow". Okay, that was just me being funny, the Mantra would be something more to the effect of "all in a day's climb".

I'm a huge advocate of doing things big...whatever it is; your job, the dishes, hobbies, etc...Being passionate and living life like you mean it is what it's all about.  I stumbled upon this video and I have to say...it's awesome...this guy plays the drums like his mother's life depends on it.  I'm going to type my emails like this from here on out...
December 07, 11:45 PM
I went to google images this afternoon to get cloud clipart for a presentation, to my surprise and delight they have made a few tweaks to the interface and it's awesome...

Example:

Normally I would have searched "cloud" > selected images > and the query results would have returned a plethora of images tagged cloud including a crazy guy sporting an afro & Tommy Bahama shirt in front of a "cloud" background.

Exhibit A:
The random results would have forced me to query a new search more specific to what I was looking for like "cloud blue clipart icon" which would likely results in a whittled down version of randomness and the cycle of changing the search term would have continued until eventually I found something satisfactory...

Today I was greeted with these options:
Color scheme, size, type of image...

The best part is, it works...when I clicked photos..I got photos

When I selected the pink/clipart, I got pink clipart

In the midst of my excitement I searched 'Kanye West' > selected green/photo...I got just what I asked for

Another win for Google, very few things excite me more than when a company gives it's users what they want before they even realized they wanted it.  Hats off to you my very industrious friends, hats off

Part I

The sequel

And just when you thought it couldn't get any better...

it does...

My fire alarm is going off, just my building, no other buildings, just good ol' building number one...

Dear Mr.Malfunction,

First I would like to thank you for your level of commitment to your work. And yes, persistence is the key to success...the maintenance man has only been able to pause your wrath for brief moments, you showed him who the quitter is! I've never heard a more annoying sound in my life, your Mommy and Daddy malfunction must be so proud of you. Also, thank you for being a selective interruption to my day, it's good to have high standards and I do feel really special. While I truly appreciate your efforts and understand we all have a purpose in this world, you are interrupting my morning talk radio...take a vacation, I hear Mexico is awesome and they give away free tequila shots for those such as yourself.

Sincerely,

Jackie Davis

I've compiled the following list of interweb no-no's....the following faux pas are today's equivalent of wearing white shoes after labor day in the 90's....

Facebook:
    • A tattoo only profile picture = You hate your face, which is fine we get it and may even agree but come on...photoshop does wonders. And really, a dolphin (who also has a tattoo) smoking a b*ng in a thrashed recliner...How wasted were you? Speaking of wasted, let me introduce offense numero dos >
    • Drunken status updates, comments, etc... = We all know why this is treacherous; we can literally see you slurring as you type, plus it's NEVER the game-changer of posts you thought it would be once you are sober and the damage is done...we already think you're an idiot.
    • Fighting with someone via status updates = Please save the drama for your mama. Seriously, we really don't care if Susan Knickerbocker stole your favorite Juicy logo-on-the-ass sweats, your boyfriend or even your car....really nobody cares but you and your on-again/off-again BFF. NOBODY. Further, it's unethical...the internet is a vast ocean of shared information; please use it responsibly.
    • Poking strangers = Don't poke me, I'm not your friend and if this is your way of making friends I see why you don't have any to poke. When I get a poke from a random stranger it makes me feel dirty, I immediately run a virus scan and wipe my screen. The ultimate is being poked by a tattoo-as-my-profile-pic stranger; at that point I get up and take a bath...in bleach.
    • Farmville, Mafia Wars, and other such Apps = Really, don't you have an X-box or something? Put the virtual hoe down people, you are diluting my feed with your atari-quality gaming successes. Quick fix for overcoming App addiction > Shut your computer off > Go to your nearest Barnes & Noble > pick up a copy of How to Win Friends and Influence People
    Foursquare:

    • Fast-Food Check-ins = Aren't you a little embarrassed? What you do on your time is absolutely your business, unless of course you publish it to the web via facebook & twitter, which of course makes it all of our business...Plus, McDonalds for breakfast, Jack-in-the-box for lunch and "You are now the mayor of Taco Bell!" for dinner...BARF. Hello, the private checkin was created specifically for Fast-Food places...duh chubs.
    • Mayor of Wal-Mart = There is an entire website dedicated to the failure that is the Wal-Mart shopper peopleofwalmart.com and you are advertising to the world that you are their leader? If you need shake-weights and moldy produce you are absolutely entitled to have it...but wear a disguise and don't tell your friends.
    • Creating a location at every room in your house = Ok ok, we all want the super mayor badge but not even your mother needs to know every time you go to the bathroom. This is especially applicable when you check-in to your bathroom 10 minutes after you become the mayor of 'Paco-Wong's Mexican/Asian Drive-Thru'.
    • Strip Club Check-ins = While most of us are home asleep any given Tuesday night, you're out greasing the stripper pole with your face...I woke up to the notification below at 6am Wednesday and thought "note to self: this is why we don't approve strangers, even on 4sq".  It's especially awesome that you woke up and headed straight for good ol'  DQ...

I'll update this as I come across new failed uses of social networking, but for now this is sufficient...If you are a frequent offender of the above named crimes just remember that the first step to recovery is always admitting you have a problem.
